A short bio
I'm a postdoctoral researcher in the Computational Science Lab at the Informatics Institute, University of Amsterdam. My work sits between network science and information theory. With Rick Quax, I lead the network analyses in the ZonMw-funded consortium "Guts to beat depression!". Using gut microbiome data from more than 20,000 people, I search for combinations of microbes, metabolites and host factors that relate to depression only when they occur together, and for the microbial targets where an intervention would have the widest effect. My methods come from my PhD, where I studied how symptoms, signs and diseases combine in older adults. I use higher-order measures such as O-information and partial information decomposition to detect effects that appear only when several factors act together, and that pairwise association measures miss entirely. I developed this work on large population cohorts, including LASA, HELIUS and UK Biobank. Alongside that I work on causality and structure learning such as Bayesian networks and causal discovery. I'm particularly interested in making these methods usable by others: open, bias-aware workflows and tools rather than one-off analyses. I studied Mathematics at Trinity College Dublin and Computational Science at the University of Amsterdam, and I co-founded CausalixAI.
